So I have been home for about 3 months now and I have finally gotten to capturing some of the 120 hours of footage that was shot on the trip. It was a very enjoyable experience... its been just long enough that I had forgotten much of what transpired at the outset and sitting back and just watching the tapes capture was a sure fire trigger for warm fuzzies all over. The first 8 tapes are mostly comprised of interviews with our family before we left and eachother at the outset in chicago and dublin.
The first few days of the trip were really special, Ireland was beautiful and I was still filled with the initial joy of realizing that the trip had actually begun... we were really doing it. The first night we camped in Rush was amazing... and all we did was eat bread and cheese on the beach... but I tell you now; that was the best bread and cheese I had ever eaten... even after I dropped it in the sand 3 times.
Watching yourself get interviewed is really quite excruciating... I tend to just go on and on forever, forming all sorts of convoluted half thoughts. This editing is going to be a long process. The first interviews with each other went off without any real awkwardness though... later on it seemed to get harder as the experiences and questioning mounted up.
I have had a few months now to slow down and think about some of the dispute conversations and personal differences in opinions that cropped up about the eventual documentary. About a month in I remember drawing a line in the sand to try to "protect the artistic integrity" of the eventual documentary... early on in Rush, it was not even an issue and the camera was viewed as a benevolent documentation of all our fun and joy. Watching these first few tapes brought me back to how I felt getting started... I love these guys and I will be forever grateful to them for going on this trip with me. More than anything I want to respect them and create a film that they can enjoy... thats the least I can do and anything else would be rather presumptuous at this point.
I am leaving off at tape 8 for now, Jenny from Rush just talked me into buying a green frog for 20 euros... that was my food budget for the next week... Mark met a guy that clued him in on the history of St. Patrick, Carl and Johny got us invited to an all night party in the neighborhood...
